FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 3D scanning, and how can it help my business or project?

3D scanning is a fast, non-contact method for capturing the exact size and shape of a physical object and converting it into precise digital data. EMS3D uses handheld laser scanners, structured-light scanners, long-range scanners, and other metrology systems to record millions of measurement points, creating an accurate 3D representation of the part.

The process typically includes on-site or in-lab scanning, data cleanup and alignment, and—when required—CAD modeling or dimensional inspection reporting.

For businesses, 3D scanning eliminates guesswork. It enables reproduction of obsolete parts, verification against CAD, tooling inspection, space-claim analysis, and faster product development—reducing downtime, improving quality, and avoiding costly trial-and-error.

EMS3D offers a full range of industrial 3D measurement services, including:

  • Handheld 3D scanning
  • Laser tracking
  • Structured-light scanning
  • Portable CMM inspection
  • Long-range scanning
  • Industrial CT scanning

Each technology is selected based on part size, accuracy requirements, environment, and deliverables – ensuring the right tool is used for every application.

Yes. EMS3D sells, supports, and trains customers on professional-grade 3D scanning hardware, laser trackers, probing systems, and metrology and CAD software. We support customers across the U.S. from our offices in Florida and Michigan, providing complete solutions – rom selection and installation to training and long-term support.
We work with trusted manufacturers including:

  • FARO® Creaform
  • API Metrology
  • Surphaser
  • PolyWorks
  • Geomagic
  • SOLIDWORKS

Because we actively use these systems on real projects, we don’t just sell equipment – we help you implement the right solution for your workflow.

  • Handheld 3D scanners capture dense surface data quickly and are ideal for small to medium-sized parts, reverse engineering, and inspection.
  • Laser trackers provide ultra-precise point measurements over large distances and are used for alignment, assembly, and large-scale inspection.
  • Long-range scanners capture buildings, ships, aircraft, facilities, and large tooling efficiently.

EMS selects the right technology for each project to ensure accuracy without overspending on unnecessary tools.

Accuracy depends on the system and application. EMS handheld scanners achieve accuracies down to 15 microns (.0006″), while laser trackers and CT scanners deliver even tighter tolerances over large volumes.

We help customers select the appropriate system based on part size, environment, accuracy needs, budget, and workflow.

Industries that rely on tight tolerances, complex geometry, and high-cost components benefit the most, including:

  • Aerospace & Defense
  • Automotive &
  • Transportation
  • Marine & Composites
  • Energy, Power Generation,
  • Oil & Gas
  • Heavy Industry &
  • Fabrication
  • Product Development & Manufacturing

Basically almost any manufacturing process can be helped by

Turnaround depends on size, complexity, deliverables, and location. Some projects are completed the same day, while larger or full reverse-engineering efforts may take several weeks. We provide a clear schedule after reviewing your requirements.

Experience matters.

EMS3D has been providing professional 3D scanning, reverse engineering, dimensional inspection, and metrology services since 2001. For more than 22 years, this has been our sole focus. We are not a machine shop, engineering firm, or manufacturing company that offers 3D scanning as a side service—3D measurement technology is what we do every day.

Over the years, we have successfully completed projects involving everything from small precision components to large industrial equipment, vehicles, tooling, structures, and facilities. Our experience spans a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, defense, power generation, marine, manufacturing, metal fabrication, consumer products, and many others.

Every project is different. That’s why we work closely with our customers on a consultative basis to understand their goals, requirements, accuracy needs, deliverables, timeline, and budget. We then recommend the most appropriate combination of hardware, software, and workflow to achieve the desired results.

Whether you need a CAD model created from an existing part, a dimensional inspection, a large-scale scanning project, or assistance selecting a 3D scanning system for your organization, EMS3D brings decades of real-world experience and proven expertise to every project.

Our goal is simple: provide the right solution, the right technology, and the right level of expertise to help our customers succeed.

It depends on usage frequency, staffing, budget, and project complexity. Many customers choose a hybrid approach – owning equipment for daily needs while relying on EMS3D for specialized or large-scale work. We’re happy to help you decide what makes the most sense.

At EMS3D, all of the 3D scanning equipment and software we use and sell is manufactured and developed in North America. This provides an added level of security, data integrity, and confidence for customers working on sensitive projects.

For aerospace, defense, government, critical infrastructure, proprietary product development, and other confidential applications, knowing where your hardware and software originate can be an important consideration. North American-developed solutions help reduce concerns about foreign access to sensitive data and intellectual property.

Many 3D scanning providers use scanners and software developed or manufactured in countries where data security standards, government oversight, and intellectual property protections may differ significantly. In those cases, customers may have limited visibility into how their data is handled, stored, transmitted, or who may ultimately have access to it.

By utilizing North American-manufactured 3D scanning technology and software, EMS3D provides customers with a trusted solution for projects where security, confidentiality, and data integrity matter.

Consumer and entry-level 3D scanners have become very affordable and can be excellent tools for hobbyists, makers, and simple scanning applications. If you’re scanning small, relatively simple parts where precision is not critical, an entry-level scanner may be all you need.

However, there is a significant difference between consumer-grade scanners and the industrial metrology-grade equipment used by EMS3D.

Our 3D scanners are designed for professional engineering, manufacturing, inspection, reverse engineering, aerospace, automotive, and defense applications where accuracy, repeatability, and data quality are critical. The equipment we use is manufactured in ISO-accredited facilities and independently tested to internationally recognized standards, including ISO 10360 and VDI/VDE 2634 Part3.

Beyond the hardware itself, EMS3D utilizes advanced reverse engineering, inspection, and metrology software capable of handling complex geometries, large datasets, GD&T analysis, dimensional inspection, and CAD model creation. The software alone often exceeds the cost of many consumer-grade scanning systems.

Most importantly, experience matters. EMS3D has been providing professional 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and metrology services since 2001. Our team understands how to properly scan challenging surfaces, large assemblies, complex geometries, and high-accuracy components while delivering reliable, engineering-grade results.

If your project involves:

  • Tight tolerances and high accuracy requirements
  • Large or complex parts and assemblies
  • Reverse engineering for manufacturing
  • Dimensional inspection and quality control
  • Aerospace, defense, automotive, or industrial applications
  • On-site scanning services
  • Secure handling of proprietary data

then a commercial or industrial-grade solution is typically the right choice.

While consumer scanners and industrial metrology systems both create 3D models, the level of accuracy, data quality, reliability, software capability, support, and expertise behind the results are fundamentally different. For critical engineering and manufacturing applications, there is simply no substitute for professional-grade equipment and experienced operators.

No, EMS3D does not rent 3D scanners, laser trackers or other equipment and software.

There are several reasons for this. First, professional 3D scanning systems represent a significant investment and require careful handling, calibration, and maintenance. Liability and equipment protection are important considerations.

More importantly, industrial 3D scanners are not simply point-and-shoot devices. Producing accurate, high-quality scan data requires proper training and experience with both the hardware and software. Without that training, many users struggle with scan setup, alignment, accuracy verification, data processing, and generating usable deliverables.

For most projects, customers find it more cost-effective and efficient to have EMS3D perform the scanning as a service. Our experienced team can complete the project quickly and accurately while ensuring the highest level of data quality.

If you anticipate ongoing scanning needs, purchasing your own system may be the better long-term solution. EMS3D can help you evaluate your requirements and recommend the right scanner, software, and training package for your application.
